Iran's classical art music relies on both improvisation and composition, and is based on a series of modal scales and tunes including twelve Dastgahs and Avazes.[16] Compositions can vary immensely from start to finish, usually alternating between low, contemplative pieces and athletic displays of musicianship called tahrir. The common repertoire consists of more than 200 short melodic motions (guše), which are classified into seven modes (dastgāh). Two of these modes have secondary modes branching from them that are called āvāz. This whole body is called radif, of which there are several versions, each in accordance to the teachings of a particular master (ostād).

Improvisation will be performed in this concert.

HIMLAKROPP 29-30/10

Concert 1pm
To book for the concert: send an email to bokning.kulturtemplet@gmail.com and give your
name and number of guests.
Anita van Doorn, Evelina Åhrman, Carmen Fetz and Jorge Alcaide present "Suspensions",
an exhibition/installation at Kulturtemplet, an old underground reservoir in Gothenburg,
Sweden.

Kulturtemplet is its own physical archive, albeit in limbo. It occupies a fluctuating space
between dilapidation and reincarnation, afterthought and conscious contemplation. Rumor
has it that the reservoir once supplied the bathhouses that served the residents of Majorna
in order to fulfill the needs of cleaning and washing in times of old. Today, Kulturtemplet’s
future is uncertain, but our vision is to fulfill people’s contemporary needs of cleansing in
our mental spaces where we often find saturation and confusion. The installation
“Suspensions” pays tribute to the history of the reservoir at the same time that we
illuminate its possible future as a place for for art, culture and contemplation.

CONCERT
Join us and experience the reservoir's natural echo and other qualities! Once a day during
the exhibition times we will hold a concert in the the darkness. We will start by meeting
outside the entrance door, then we go down into the temple together where we find our
seats, and then all lighting and sound effects will be turned off. The concert is
approximately seven to ten minutes long, during which time Kulturtemplet will be closed for
general admission.
Because the venue has a limited capacity bookings are required for the concert. To book
please send an email to: bokning.kulturtemplet@gmail.com and give your name number of
guests.

Things to note:
The venue has a year-round temperature of between 12 and 15 degrees, so dress warmly.
Natural stalagmites form on the floor inside, so please mind your step. Please be aware
that the space is only currently accessible via a long, steep staircase.

Kåda has its roots in Dalsland and has since the start in 2018 produced exhibitions and events.
To the exhibition, Kåda has invited artists whose work is in line with the theme Longing. The curating group consists of Kåda artists Linnea Dalstrand, Tove Starfelt and Helena Pernow, in collaboration with guest curator Sofia Styx.

The exhibition is based on thoughts about intimacy and distance, where material and objects are in focus. The group exhibition shows works by artisans, from different fields of material, who tell about experiences of longing. Maybe there is more longing in our lives - not least in a time of pandemic, where we keep physical distance and thirst for closeness.

22/10 Malin Wättring solo in Kulturtemplet

CANCELED !

WE CANCEL OUR PUBLIC EVENTS AS LONG AS DUE TO THE CURRENT RESTRICTIONS

Malin Wättring - fotograf_ Amanda Andre

Malin Wättring is a saxophonist and composer, active on the modern jazz and improvisation scene. She runs a quartet in her own name, Malin Wättring 4, currently works as a musician on stage at the Gothenburg Opera and has played with bands such as Anna Högberg Attack, Fire! Orchestra and Bohuslän Big Band. In 2017, she was named Composer of the Year at the Swedish Radio Jazz Cat Gala.

In addition to the music profession, Malin works as a teacher in kundalini yoga. In the yogic tradition, sounds and vibrations are used for healing purposes. Malin uses gongs and sound bowls in her yogic practice and during her classes.

When Malin was offered to play in the Temple of Culture at the 1GBG festival and was told about the festival's purpose, to heal the city so that more people can meet with the culture that united the heart, an idea was born. To combine Malin's personal musical expression with the yogic intention to let sounds and vibrations heal. With this concert, Malin wants to contribute to the healing of the city.

You will hear an approximately 60 minute long improvised concert with saxophone, sound bowls and gongs.

The 1Gbg festival chose not to have any public concerts following the latest recommendations regarding the pandemic and the rapid spread without
solely  live streaming. Here you can read about the festival:

Malin's concert, however, is based on the physical experience and especially in  this magical room. Given the minimal risk that we consider ours  events in the Temple of Culture means with a maximum of 20 people and large areas to spread out on  we also choose to perform this concert as planned. We will take extra care in how we prepare the room and space between the audience and ask your visitors to keep their distance and to stay at home at the slightest symptom of illness.

THE TREATMENT OF ONDE

IlTrattamentoDelleOndeGialain12.jpg

Iraqi Bodies Stage Laboratory: The Grotesque have invited  guest artist  Claudia Castellucci in order to share in her scholastic conception of art, learning and dance in particular. It is an honor and great privilege to be working with this unique artist whose work spans over nearly forty years in the avant-garde theater of not only Italy but the whole world through the company  Societies  based in Cesena, Italy.

On the last day of our work with Claudia Castellucci we will present the Dance

THE TREATMENT OF ONDE

[THE TREATMENT OF THE WAVES]

The rhythm of bells lies at the root of this dance, furthermore opening up to its negative, absent part: silence and the memory of a sound that is prolonged over time and that, while being dispersed, incorporates new rings. Our work involves the sound of the bells and the presence of the dancers, caught between the chiming and the rests. The dance is founded on the sound of the bells and is carried out with staves. The spectral consistency of this sound leads to a form of listening that binds together presence and memory (a presence that does not pass). The sequence of the beats, which continue to float in the air, generates aleatory coincidences and different rhythms that come together. The Dancers treat all of this like a teaching.

AUDIOCOPTERS nav

AUDIOCOPTER's hub is the AUDIOCOPTER that Sebastian Öberg invented and built earlier this year when the corona had just put the world out of play. The audiocopter's two speaker funnels have been speaker speakers in an English football arena and later they were used by the MOOSE'S GARDEN at their concerts. One was for many years a kitchen lamp with Sebastian Öberg and the other was a model for Stenbeck's Millennium Shift Fountain, which sprayed 100 meters into the air. Now two more trumpet funnels have been located and procured from England so there will be DOUBLE rotating Audiocopters! SEBASTIAN ÖBERG from Fläskkvartetten was in the 70's one of the members of ÄLGARNAS TRÄDGÅRD who has now bred 50 years later in this new band AUDIOKOPTER and in addition to ÖBERG himself on cello & modified crankshaft, AMANDA WERNE from Slowgold and on electric guitar is on , TIMO LUNDGREN also called Invisible Man from URAN GBG and Exorcist on bass, drummer HENRIK WARTEL who also played since the 70s with a plethora of different artists and bands and HANNA CHAWKI on synth and voice that abounds in different places such as surreal Surreal Lovers. Improvised kraut, drone, minimalism, psychedelia from ancient times into the future.

Heart root
Johanna_Cha_hjartats_vag (1).jpg

Friday 9/10  at 19, Saturday 10/10  at 5 p.m.

Hjärtrot is a sound work in interplay between Johanna Ståhl's vocal expression and Cha Blasco's electronic sound world. With Ståhl's voice as a starting point, they reinterpret her song Gertrud, into completely different musical landscapes, beyond the words. The heart root wants to expand the boundaries of vocal and auditory performances, and in the borderland between the human voice and the digital, they invite you to an abstract and poetic world of sound.

The sound work is based on the heart, as a figure, body, sound and organ in contact with the fragile and wild, into the world of emotions and into the root.

About Johanna Ståhl

Johanna Ståhl has a theater and singing background. Among other things, she is active at the Örebro Academy of Music, where she teaches acting, voice and pedagogy. In her art, she is interested in song and voice expressions that take a more experimental direction, where the vocal expressions can take on lots of colors, shapes and sounds beyond traditional song genres. She is interested in voice and song design where the singer through the voice can get in touch with and express inner images, feelings and dreams.

About Cha Blasco

Cha Blasco is an artist, composer, music producer, DJ, and sound designer from Barcelona who is based in Gothenburg. As a composer, he has enriched many performing arts on Gothenburg's cultural scene in recent years. He strives to break down the boundaries between different music and art genres with his creative interdisciplinary projects. Cha has a strong interest in programming, decentralized systems, and a strong commitment to climate issues.

Welcome to CAVE MUSIC, an exploration of the relationship between electronic instruments and the acoustic wonder.

Kulturmeplet's fantastic and specific sound and atmosphere is the basis that allows the music to take place, the two are in a conversation with each other. A "duo" if you like.

Various electronic instruments together with percussion, drums, various objects and objects become a mixture of sounds that together with the space create CAVE MUSIC.

From heavy, beat-driven music to quiet ambiance, to the strong and to the very very weak (and everything in between)

The Temple of Culture is a relatively "hard" place, so I do not recommend that you take your best shoes, and it does not hurt to bring a jacket.

There are limited places (about 20), not because of the virus, but because of the limited crowd that can be taken in the temple, so book in time! :)

8/8  Mask  and man -  16.00 & 18.00
116723342_10157505209980922_473472080042

Mask and Man is both a sound  and a visual experience. The audience is not given many answers but perhaps questions and understanding on a suggestive level.
The audience will however meet three very concrete characters, solid in mask. Each mask has a musical theme composed around their character. The masks discover themselves which is reflected in the music. They communicate with song, but lack vocabulary. Yet, something is being said, very slowly they form a word, a name, a sentence…

The masks are made by Torbjörn Alström.
The performance and music is by and with Maria Hansson:
I created the performance during my time as an artist in residence in OBRAS foundation, Portugal. I was working with a concept I call "natural opera" and the aim has been a free voice used acoustic, without the boundaries of voice boxes or genres. The same applies to the dancing and theater parts, all working together in the "natural opera" concept. I have been inspired by all that comes naturally to me on an individual level as well as a universal level such as nature-tones and primitive sounds like calls. The focus has been what the expression requires for sound, therefore all between belting to Bel Canto is presented in a musical genre 'no mans land'.
Mask and Man was originally performed and recorded in Évoramonte castle, in an abandoned marble quarry in the area and also on the residence OBRAS foundation for an encouraging audience. The exploration of these venues were also an exploration of the acoustics sites, that inspired the performance and when I was looking for a place in Sweden to adapt this performance into, Kulturtemplet with it's magnificent acoustic was the natural choice. And together with Jorge Alcaide on complementing instruments the performance will gain a new dimension.

Ritos III is the third edition of an art and music festival in the Temple of Culture. For 3 days, we open up for artists from different branches to create and collaborate on the theme "rites". Performance, concerts, installations and ritual excursions.

One of the most important aspects of human rites is about her relationship to nature and the cosmos as well as transitions between different stages in life such as from child to adult, from unmarried to initiated.
We experience today that we are in such a crossroads as a society where we are no longer the old but still not the new. We believe that there is a strong need to find meaning in our creation. What is important? what is sacred? Even if we can not give answers, we can create rooms where we can meet and deal with these questions in a playful and serious way.

Mariana Palacios / musician and filmmaker / and Sebastian Ruiz / dance performer / have had since a while ago an interest of combining disciplines and interacting with the old water reservoir located in Majorna.
The performance is the result of a first approach into a performative action where a musical instrument also takes part: the wavedrum, a multifaceted electronic drum that creates a wide variety of sounds. Mariana and Sebastian activate the instrument while moving their bodies and interact with the resonances of the space.
In collaboration with Kulturtemplet.

In a quiet and heartfelt meeting, arias and recitatives are dissolved from the opera repertoire through improvisation and clouds of tones. Out of the clouds arises a timelessly falling music that tells of man's fragility, strength and longing for truth, love and the potentially unattainable.

The music is taken from Massenet's opera "Manon" and Bellini's "Il Capulleti ed i Montecchi".

Agnes Thörn is a soprano and is training to be an opera singer at the University of Stage and Music in Gothenburg. With a background in violin and dance, and with a great interest in dramaturgical form, choreographic design and creative writing, she strives to develop and broaden the concept of chamber opera in new contexts and environments.

Jonas Nilsson is a double bassist & composer originally active in jazz and improvised music. With a great love for a variety of musical traditions, Jonas creates a creative and curious music that often seems both heartfelt and explosive and intensely present. He is currently studying at the Individual Program at the University of Stage and Music in Gothenburg where he is developing new chamber music. Book places at

The author of the repertoire is Czech flute player and bass clarinet player Zofie Kasparova who has been based in Gothenburg for five years. In Kulturtemplet we will combine our compositions with a lot of improvisation and silence.

Three artists, Anita van Doorn, Rina Dedo and Anna Maria Saar, present an installation and exhibition as part of the Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) Extended.

The sea is constantly breathing like us. The sea gives, the sea receives, and the sea takes away from us but the traces are always left behind. Remnants of the memories linger and we swim in the aftermath of everything that happens.

Based on their own sense of reverence for nature, our material surroundings and a both everyday and remarkable everyday life that we so often take for granted, the artists present a place-specific and sensual installation in Gråberget's old water reservoir.

Descend into the underworld. Let the currents carry you on a journey down to the bottom of the sea. Welcome to an underwater expedition in a wonderful environment.

Pinquins is a cross-border percussion trio based in Oslo. They are curious and exploratory, often mixing contemporary music with other genres and playing instruments that go far beyond traditional percussion instruments.
In his quest for new sounds and new expressions, Pinquins has collaborated with composers and artists from around the world, performing countless works, performed at festivals and in concert series from Tromsø to Melbourne.

The program presented in the Temple of Culture consists of works composed by composers that are particularly relevant to Pinquins right now.
"Underpassing" by Malin Bång (SE) is written for Pinquins and premiered in 2019. This work draws inspiration from Norwegian road tunnels, and during the composition process, the composer and trio were on a "tunnel safari" in Oslo and the eastern part of the country.
"Table 1" and "737-800: A Piece for an Aircraft Center", by Manos Tsangaris and Jessie Marino respectively, were not written for Pinquins, but both composers are relevant with new music for the trio 2020.
Sarah Hennies' work "Psalm 2" is a solo for wooden blocks and is played by Jennifer Torrence.
In addition to these works, Pinquins will explore the special sound of the Temple of Culture with some improvisations to tie the concert.

Dance Remainings is a dance and performance duo formed in 2017 based in Gothenburg, a collaboration between Sebastián Ruiz Bartilson and Jonny Berg. They examine the power of ritualized acts on stage and the dialogue between ceremonial elements and contemporary performing arts. Intuition and closeness are key words in artistic exploration, as well as togetherness and brotherhood. With the aim of conveying a special view of eroticism and intimacy, which goes beyond societal structures and social categories.

Stensöta_04_foto.jpg

An artist, an artisan, two musicians, two composers and a film photographer. What happens when these people and their artistic expression meet in a forest?

From two forests with different surroundings, the country and the city, music and art have been created. The Hyvelspån project started in Reins Klosters skog in Rissa outside Trondheim and continued in the Botanical Garden in Gothenburg

Now Stensöta takes the forest down into the underground and presents the material from the Hyvelspån project in concert form in the Culture Temple in Gothenburg.

Stensöta - a duo consisting of Karin Wiberg, violin, and Ellen Sjö Sander, marimba - is passionate about producing new music in collaboration with female composers. We both have a fascination for wood. Forests, trees and our instruments that are made of wood are topics that constantly recur in our conversations. The idea of getting a piece of wood that could just as easily have been used to create heat energy, to vibrate and create sounds that can be tamed is something incredibly beautiful. Art and life meet in the material.

About Shavings

In 2015, Stensöta started the international project Hyvelspån. With the project, together with other artists, we wanted to explore the theme of wood and forest, and our common denominators around it. What do people who have chosen to work with wood have in common with each other? At what points does our passion meet? The place and the meeting provided inspiration and a starting point for the process.

In the project Hyvelspån participated:

Musicians: Ellen Sjö Sander (SE), Karin Wiberg (SE) Composers: Ellen Lindquist (US / NO), Tebogo Monnakgotla (SE)
Visual artist: Sonja Borer (CH)
Textile artist: Ingrid Becker (NO)

Concert in the Culture Temple with the flute quartet 40f

Saturday 27/4
at 15.00 and 17.00
Admission: SEK 100/50 (student)

Music by Tomas Hulenvik and Martin Q Larsson
40f: Ann Elkjär, Jill Widén, Åsa Karlberg, Anna Svensdotter

40f has played on large and small stages both in Sweden and internationally. They have given concerts at the Concert Hall in Stockholm and the traditional Musikverein in Vienna, but also on small intimate stages such as art galleries - almost in the lap of the audience. Many composers have written directly for the ensemble and together with them, 40f has experimented with a new kind of sound world where all aspects of the flute emerge.
In Kulturtemplet, the audience gets to hear 40f's oldest and newest piece in a concert that uses the whole room:
"Everything is good here" by Tomas Hulenvik, written 2012-13 with Laus church on Gotland with 12 seconds reverberation in mind. It will fit perfectly in the Temple of Culture!
Martin Q Larsson's "soduku # 6" gets its premiere at this concert.

Keep in mind that it is still cold inside the reservoir, so dress warmly even if the sun is shining :)

La revelación / Uppenbarelsen

kokecristicamilo kulturtemplet 2019.jpg

What happens when the boundary between fear and rapture becomes the abode of creation. When beauty entices to remain in the encounter with the unknown and the unreal.

A Collaboration of:
Cristina Alcaide & Camilo Acevedo Saiz / Chile and
Jorge Alcaide / Sweden-Chile

Based on the fantastic possibilities of the Temple of Culture, we want to explore musically and spatially a narrative that has connections to the sea.

This as a first step in a longer project that will be about linking two port cities on opposite sides of the earth. Valparaiso in Chile and Gothenburg. They are already linked, through the sea, through old sailors, music and stories. These will be told and take different forms in exhibitions, installations and works of art in future sub-projects.

Welcome!

Jorge Alcaide, voc, fl, tiple

RE-drum / Emerge 14/3 at 19:00

- Re-Drum -

Re-Drum is a project of Pavel Aleshin, experimental musician from Oryol, Russian Federation. He uses field recordings and found sounds, his own voice, acoustic instruments and non musical objects to create a living environment, oscillating from warm calmness to ritualistic depths.

- Emerge -

Emerge (Sascha Stadlmeier) is inspired by the minimalist traditions of experimentalism and non-academic noise music, focusing on generating sound structures intended to make atmospheres emerge that are open to each listener's own interpretation. The choice of sound sources used is usually very limited. In most cases only rudiments of the original sounds are recognizable due to various treatments. Emerge also uses and recycles raw material from a variety of artists / musicians.

14/2 Jonas Nilsson

09-September.JPG

Jonas Nilsson - double bassist, composer and free improviser.

Jonas' improvisation is based on the search for new sonic worlds to discover and explore. With a great love for a variety of musical traditions, he explores the possibilities and impossibilities of the double bass through almost ceremonial improvisations. By working actively to tune the strings of the double bass, the whole instrument's sound changes and in it a new music is allowed to emerge.

"Life is fleeting.

The only thing that is true - is that everything is constantly changing.

To improvise music is to listen into the emptiness, to capture an impulse and - for a short while - give it life and form, and then let it disappear into nothingness again. For me, music is the closest I come to something magical. "

Only 20 seats
The concert takes about 45 min

Welcome!

First out this year, we have the pleasure of presenting a long-distance guest. Far away from Argentina comes this headstrong bandoneonist whose music not only revolves around tango but above all the folk music that grew in the Argentine countryside. He is also a fantastic improviser and has a strong connection to the dance and the ritual aspect of the music. In the culture temple there will of course be an exciting encounter with the room, the mystique and the shadows. Do not miss this!
